Knock On The Phone

The Age

Tuesday November 4, 1997

JENNY SINCLAIR

IN THE future, people won't make phone calls; they'll virtually fly to their friends' doors and knock to initiate a conversation.

Finland's Helsinki Telecom is busily rolling out a symmetrical DSL network to all homes, spokesman Risto Linturi said at a forum on technology at Melbourne's Interact festival.

They have created a "virtual Helsinki", navigable by mouse, which allow users to surf the network through a totally visual interface.

The network would allow individuals to set up their own "TV stations", making high-quality video available to whoever wanted to look, Linturi said.
