SP TELEMEDIA will go ahead with plans to roll out a digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband network mainly for regional areas along the eastern seaboard.
The DSL network will connect with the telecommunications wholesaler's existing broadband transmission infrastructure. The roll-out requires equipment to be installed in Telstra exchanges. SPT general manager Michael Simmons said at least 150 exchanges in regional areas and 120 in capital cities had been identified. The upgrade has already started with the Newcastle exchanges. "This successful first implementation has given directors the confidence to undertake what will be a significant investment in broadband infrastructure," Mr Simmons said. SPT has targeted regional NSW, Victoria and Queensland. SPT shares finished unchanged at $2.40.
